What To Look For

Brand Names

You have probably heard of Fender, Gibson, or Martin. These are iconic guitar companies that have definitely stood the test of time. Other guitar manufacturers that you may or may not have heard of include Ibanez, Alvarez, Taylor, Takamine, Seagull, Ovation, Epiphone, Blueridge, B.C. Rich, Godin and dozens of others. Some of these brands are strictly high-end instruments, while others cater to beginners and professionals alike. They are all established companies making quality products.

There is something to be said for a brand name instrument. These manufacturers have a name and a reputation to protect. They will often have better quality controls in place than some of the lesser-known companies that only focus on entry-level instruments. In addition, if you ever want to sell your guitar, a brand name will definitely hold its value more than a “no-name” guitar. And don’t forget the “cool” factor. It may not seem like a big deal to you parents out there, but lets face it, it can be a very big deal to your teenage son if his friends have never heard of the name across the headstock of his guitar.

While all of this is true, keep in mind that brand name is not everything. You will almost always pay more for a brand name guitar, but will not necessarily always get more. Many of the brands listed above may produce fantastic higher-end guitars but may not produce the best beginner guitars on the market. You could just be paying for the name. It is okay to be open to some of the less popular brands of guitar that are available. There are many “no-name” guitar manufacturers out there that are doing a very good job and make a very good product for the money. Try and educate yourself about the guitar you are looking to buy and focus on getting the best quality guitar for your money. It is good to be aware of brand names, but don’t let it be the sole factor.
